Out of fear from the unknown number, the girl rushes upstairs to check the baby and calls the police to trace the number and come to the house, eventually it turns out the number that called her is the number of the house that she's in.

Horror film Trailers

Ju-on: The Grudge

- Haunting takes place often in isolated area's (Inside their house)
- Only one person at a time is haunted
- The other characters often do not believe that the main character is being haunted
- Enigma codes apply to this film as you do not know why these ghosts are here or why they're haunting the house/people

Characters - Two spirits (Mother & Son) haunting a family (husband, wife, mother-in-law)
Narrative - Set in the present
Lighting - Often dark or low key lighting, scariest scenes often set when its dark outside

In the trailer, there is a voice over of a man detailing snippets of what the film is about. there are short and fast paced clips of the characters in frightening situations and there are sharp string violins playing in the background, bringing on tension.

The Exorcist

- The possession of the young girl gets worse as the film goes along
- The possessed girl never leaves her room and you know every time one of the characters enters her room, something bad is going to happen
- The possessed girls antics don't just happen at night, but the majority of them do

Characters - The young possessed girl, the girls mother and the Exorcist/priest that helps them
Narrative - Set in the present
Lighting - Hard lighting is used in a lot of the scenes

In the trailer, there is also a voice over of a man, telling you of some of the things that happen within the film, and with all horror movie trailers, there are snapshots of the characters in frightening situations, for example, the mother walking in her daughters room to find her being possessed etc.

Silence of the Lambs

- You know more than the characters do (who the killer is etc)
- The scariest scenes happen at night or when Clarice is in an isolated area

Characters - Clarice Starling (An FBI trainee) Hannibal Lector (A cannibalistic sociopath) and Buffalo Bill (A deranged serial killer)
Narrative - Like most horror/thriller films, its set in the present
Lighting - mostly low key lighting

In the trailer the characters talk before the actual voice over, again the voice being of a man, they say things to do with what the film is about. clips are shown within the trailer of the characters in frightening situations but without giving too much away.

Copycat Advert

Here is my version of the Nivea "My silhouette!" advert.
As you can see, I have not produced exactly the same image as the one in the advert, as i could not find it, however, i do think that it is a good match.

James Bond Ideology

Gender - The Ideology based around gender is that women are the more passive ones and men are the active ones, this is proven because of the female lead role, she doesn't act very self sufficient when it comes to escaping from the villains or even trying to fight them off.
The films representation of women in general are that they're the followers and men are the leaders, with lots of female henchmen surrounding the main villain, who happens to be a man, being given instructions to kill Bond and his accomplice.
One last thing to pick up on is the fact that his accomplice, a young blonde and attractive woman, doesn't actually do much in the film aside from screaming for James' help when she nearly dies (every five minutes) and generally being in the way.

Race - The Ideology based around Race is that basically, everyone who isn't white, without an impairment of any kind, English speaking and middle to upper classed is a crook or is going to die within the film.
For example, all of Bonds' allies were either from within Britain or the US, no where else, making it out to seem like other countries are evil or are out to get the British and the Americans.

Age - Age didn't really play a major part in this Bond film, however, it would seem that all the women were in their twenties and mostly all of the men were in their thirties and above.

Sexuality - Sexuality played a major part in the Bond films, regarding that James Bond is strictly Heterosexual and very masculine, he's the one who gets all the women and never fails to make the ladies swoon.
There also doesn't seem to be any homosexuals within any of the Bond films from what i've seen, that its almost forbidden to be gay within one of these films.

Advert analysis

Who is the target audience?
The target audience for my advert are women, mainly women in there 20’s and 30’s.
I think that this advert is for middle aged women who’re looking for love or who have a partner they want to impress.

Visual Codes
The layout of the advert is that there is a centre image of a man lifting a woman up into the air, they both have smiles on there faces and look like they’re partners. The two people are in front of a sunny blue sky and are standing on fresh cut green grass, giving the whole advert a kind of fresh look.

Colours such as green, blue and white are dominant within the advert, this gives the audience connotations of the product being very fresh and natural, as all of these colours can be associated with nature. The blue being the sky and the bright green being the grass, the white stands out the most as it is the colour of the woman’s dress in the image and also the colour of most of the text within the advert.

Typography is used in the advert; all but one piece of text is in capital letters, giving it that eye-catching and bold look, it also makes the text look neat and all together.
Although I don’t know what exact font is used for the text, I can tell you that one half of the text is in a long skinny font, whereas the other is in a bold and thick font, giving it a contrast.

Technical codes
The image on the advert is framed so it is central, like it’s the main part of the advert, despite there being text in front of it.
I think that High-key lighting is used in this advert, as you just wouldn’t get the same effects with low-key or natural light.

Dennotations and Connotations

Mise-En-Scène is an expression used to describe the design aspects of a theatre or film production.
Design aspects include...

  • Decor - An important element of "putting in the scene" is décor, the objects contained in and the setting of a scene. Décor can be used to amplify character emotion or the dominant mood of a film.
  • Lighting -The intensity, direction, and quality of lighting have a profound effect on the way an image is perceived. Light affects the way colors are rendered, both in terms of hue and depth, and can focus attention on particular elements of the composition.
  • Space -The representation of space affects the reading of a film. Depth, proximity, size and proportions of the places and objects in a film can be manipulated through camera placement.
  • Costume - Costume simply refers to the clothes that characters wear.

Cinematography is the making of lighting and camera choices when recording photographic images for the cinema.

Editing is the process of selecting and preparing language, images, sound, video or film through processes of correction, condensation, organization and other modifications in various media.

Sound is divided into two separate groups, Diegetic and Non-Diegetic.

Diegetic -
  • Sound who’s source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the film: voices of characters
  • sounds made by objects in the story
  • music represented as coming from instruments in the story space ( = source music)
  • Diegetic sound is any sound presented as originated from source within the film's world.
  • Another term for Diegetic sound is "Actual sound".

Non-Diegetic -
  • Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action:
  • narrator's commentary
  • sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect
  • mood music
  • Another term for Non-Diegetic sound is "commentary sound"

Britney Spears - 'Toxic" Codes and meaning

The main point that i gathered from the video, is that it is probably about a boyfriend/Ex-boyfriend and how she's strong and capable with or without them. Another meaning i thought of was that she's addicted to this one guy and that how having him is like having a certain fix to her.

The camera angles used in the video to make the events that follow more pleasing to the eye, for example, the first camera shot of some birds flying in the sky with the plane that Britney is on flying towards the camera.

The videos music is in synch with her lip movement, matching her every move. The music itself isn't overpowering though, infact, certain parts of the music fit in with what she's doing, E.G: At the end of the video, when she's poisoning the man on the floor, she looks straight into the camera and says one of the lyrics "I think I'm ready now" and jumps out of the window, all in time to the music.
